As I understand the process (but never having actually done it) redundancy and load-balancing your NICs uses Virtual Ethernet thingys-- the outside world sees the virtual numbers &c, but the hardware 'knows' that there are really 2 (or more) paths to pick from.
There are some nice examples I've seen (but have not kept).
As Rob says, filling a 1GB card takes some doing. If I were to get moving on this it would be the links between our 2 systems (although those cards are probably not near filled either).
