A system I'm helping out on recently had problems sending email through

When trying to start the SMTP Server, we see this message:

MCH3601 Escape
pgm: QTMSSRCD in QTCP
mod: QTMSRECO
proc: qtmsclup__Fv
stmt: 28

Not sure if this is related, but the system recently reported a problem to
IBM that the Cache battery was dying.

Although an IBM i 6.1 document, an implication that the existence of the *DTAARA QTMSCLEAN [¿in *LIBL?] may give rise to similar symptom [stmt: 26]. So perhaps follow the recommendation of that PTF cover letter SI35199 for APAR SE37559, if applicable [and report the problem also exists on v5r4, though perhaps not with the secondary symptom included in the APAR text?]:

"APAR Error Description / Circumvention

-----------------------------------------------
Creating the data are QTMSCLEAN cause the smtp server job to
fail with msgmch3601 t/QTMSRECO statement 26 and CPF9801

CORRECTION FOR APAR SE37559 :
-----------------------------
There a variable that needs to be reintialized every time we go
through the loop.
This causes the QTMSCLEAN support utility to throw an exception
on some systems. On some systems the variable is randomly
correct and QTMSCLEAN works fine.

CIRCUMVENTION FOR APAR SE37559 :
--------------------------------
Don't use the undocumented feature QTMSCLEAN unless support
tells you to do so."
