Just a quibble - very few languages actually use SQL, they typically use some variant of ODBC, and depending on the API that can get quite cumbersome. In fact, I would submit that RPG and COBOL with embedded SQL come closest to using SQL as a native language, albeit through the use of a pre-processor. EGL comes very close as well; you simply say "get" on a record with SQL attributes and the generator does the rest for you. You can override the generated SQL, but if your database is set up correctly, EGL just uses it.
