Thanks Paul. The title threw me off as I had looked at several sort manuals on InfoCenter that were not related to what I needed.

I finally found it but I'm wondering about its version. The manual is labeled V5R1. I'm wondering about using something that doesn't have more current documentation. Will someone in the future need to make modifications and not be able to find documentation?

Rick

Google FMTDTA. The IBM specs pop up first.

Mostly because I haven't been able to find documentation for the source file
yet. I know it exists (or at least, it used to) I just don't know where IBM has
hidden it.

Hi, Rick:

Why not just use the FMTDTA command to sort the file into the desired
sequence _before_ you open it and attempt to process the data
contained therein...?

I am trying to sort a flat file based on positions in the record and
defined
lengths. Specifically, the output of a Unix list directory command
piped
to an
output file. I found several examples of sorting subfiles but none
sorting flat
files. I did make some discoveries and have made tweaks based on what
I found but I still keep coming up with this error.

This is the relevant code (I think)
