Well, Yeah I do mean option 40. I won't claim a fat finger - just a
bad memory event :)

Shame it has to be a manual upgrade, but I guess that's a small price
to pay for removing the PTF part of the process.

You meant 'Option 40' :-)

But essentially you load these onto the target machine and mount them
into a virtual optical device. (Yes you can use them remotely on POWER6
or newer hardware and IBM i 6.1 or newer software but that's another
project.)

You then use them largely the same way as you would IBM Media. The only
issue is that for whatever reason Option 40 doesn't include the file on
disk one that contains the list of software on your custom the media
that IBM distribution media has. THis means you can't use GO LICPGM
option 5 (Prepare) step 1 (Work with PGMS for target release). The first
step of IPLing from your catalog is the same (PWRDWNSYS RESTART(*YES)
IPLSRC(*IMGCLG) ...) and that does LIC and base O/S. But then you
basically treat it like a manual upgrade where you select the products
to install. When that's done remember INZSYS but then you're basically
done. :-)
