Dennis,
The Power systems from my old company that consolidated the 1,800
systems are dedicated to I as far as I know. The systems at my current
company overseas are all using the I OS on the Power System. A couple in
the state are a combination of I and AIX. Bottom line, is although a
combination of AIX and I, mostly I worldwide.

That's good to hear, Larry. I should clarify that when I referred to
footprint, I didn't mean in terms of number of units - in this
virtualization world, that's meaningless; I meant instead number of
businesses on the platform - or that use it in some way.
Glad to hear about the move from Intel, but at the same time, I wonder how
those Power systems are used, and on which O/S. Just a curiosity for me; I
am sure it is a number I'll never see.
Thanks for the _sane_ response! I truly appreciate that!

I'm sorry to hear about another company leaving the i. However, I
aware of companies that have left the Intel world for core applicationsrose
and migrated to the I or Power platform. Dr. Soltis told a great story
about Google UK ditching hundreds of Intel servers for 1 i. Steve Will
also mentioned many companies in his presentation last week at DVCUG
that have migrated 'to' the Power platform from the Intel world.
Not sure how many are doing this, don't want to sound like I have
colored glasses or anything, but there are several ways to look atinto
this.
The footprint may be diminishing if you look only at pieces of
hardware. But that does not necessarily mean the presence is any less
intense. My old company had over 1,800 little AS/400 systems all over
the country, and they now only have 2 or 3 large ones. Does that mean
our OS lost all of that. Of course not, but consolidation skews the
numbers. They are no less dedicated to the platform than 10 years ago.
My current company will be consolidating over 50 iSeries systems
4 Power systems. No less dedicated to the platform though, but the
numbers go down.
Thanks, Larry

My, such language.
My current job is to eliminate three more System i units from the face
of
the earth, and one more significant company irrevocably off of the i
platform. And guess who's driving the bulk of the migration? Hint, it
isn't my old partner-in-crime, Accenture, who have a whole set of
methodologies for that effort.) No, it is our good friend IBM, whose
concern for the platform would seem dubious at best. One could argue
the
same of me in this situation, I suppose. (Gasp! A traitor in the
midst!) So
be it; doesn't make the point any less valid.
Of course, IBM won't announce numbers, but from my observations, the i
(referring to the OS and family here) footprint is fading, and has been
for
many, many years. (How many here have been involved in the migration
*to*
the i platform? Personally, I've never heard of even one....) And
that's a
shame; I hope my observation is incorrect.

Pure bullshit.
Power is the hardware. I wish I could share with everyone how much
that IBM I contributes to Power. Suffice it to say, IBM i is addingmoney
not
just to Power, but to the entire IBM corporation. IBM I has beenextremely
profitable, and the revenue generated from IBM I is noticed withinthe

that
AIX is the only operating system that IBM cares about (or that thePower
people care about). Is AIX important to IBM, you bet it is. Is IBM IEarning
important to IBM, you bet it is. If IBM I wasn't in the picture, the

It annoys me to no end when people try to spread the FUD around, that
only
cares about AIX. Yes, IBM has screwed up the marketing of the namingof

Dennis,
The things that you're as WELL AWARE of as many of the rest of us
these
1. This o/s is known (thanks to IBM ineptness) by many names, and
names
are ACCEPTED BY INDUSTRY when talking about the broad category ofsystems
that
run OS/400, uh, I mean i/os, un, I mean..... All of us (with one or2
exceptions) generally seem to understand what the others are talkingabout.
they're
2. Also as I believe you're well aware of, when IBM says "POWER"
specifically referring and wanting you to be running AIX. To IBM,os/400(or
whatever) is and has been just another add on legacy (THEIR TERMS)o/s.
operating
Keep in mind that AIX, is just another mutation of UNIX - BOTH
environments which have been around for as long or longer than CPF orOS/400
- yet for some reason IBM hasn't decided to morph their names alongwith
the
seasons... Ever wonder why?sure
OK, back to our naps...I'm sure trevor will have some retort but I'm
my
spam filter is still working... :)mailing
