After I posed the question, but before I went to lunch, I thought of the 
RTVOBJD strategy myself. Nice to know I'm not totally clueless. At the 
same time, I recognized its limitations, and its inelegance, and hoped 
somebody else would know of something better.

Given that it's an existing OPM CL program, that I don't especially want 
to do any more revalidation on it than absolutely necessary, and that 
it's never going to be the object of a qualified call, RTVOBJD is good 
enough, and the DMPCLPGM and _MATPGMNM strategies are more trouble than 
they're worth in this case.
