If the service program isn't present, one simply doesn't call the functions it implements. Plain and simple. Much the same as our QuestView product uses a number of OS features that were added at V4, and yet can get along just fine (minus the functions that use those OS features) on (if we still had V2 compilation capapbility) a V2 box.

It's called "graceful degradation."
