In that case my guess would be that you're seeing the difference
caused by end-of-line characters.

Unix-based systems use a LF character. Windows/DOS-based systems use
CR+LF. In ASCII mode the FTP client will make the necessary
adjustments on the transfer, thus the file size can change.

Can the receiver actually do what they need to with the FTPed file?
