done.

now my CFGTCP option 12 looks like this:

  HOSTNAME      'SYSTEMI'
  DMNNAME        'MYDOMAIN.LOCAL'
  DMNSCHLIST    'mydomain.local'
  HOSTSCHPTY    *LOCAL
  INTNETADR      1.1.1.1
                             1.1.1.2

..no luck :(

Sounds like you need to get rid of 1 of those.

SYSTEMI is system name in DSPNETA

Is your SYSTEMI.MYDOMAIN.LOCAL the same thing as AS400.MYDOMAIN.LOCAL

ok,

                  MYDOMAIN.LOCAL

CFGTCP option 12
  HOSTNAME      'AS400'
  DMNNAME        'MYDOMAIN.LOCAL'
  DMNSCHLIST    'mydomain.local'
  HOSTSCHPTY    *LOCAL
  INTNETADR      1.1.1.1

and SMTP system alias table

UPDDTA QATMSMTPA

USERID:      USERID1
ADDRESS:    SYSTEMI
SMTPUID:      USER1
SMTPFLAG: D
RESERVED:
DOMROUTE: MYDOMAIN.LOCAL

The Big Question :

why is that an inbound mail from internet aimed at USER1@xxxxxxxxxxxx(not
MYDOMAIN.LOCAL!) finish to be accepted under v5r4, otherwise rejected
  > under v7r1?

seems like that v5r4 doesn't honor the "complete smtp name" but considers
the "smtp user id" portion only. The DOMROUTE field in QATMSMTPA file can
be set to MYDOMAIN.LOCAL and an incoming mail from internet can still be
delivered.

VFYID          *NO

wrkdire setup is same on v5r4

SYSTEMI can ping and send outbound mail with no problem at all.
it can recive the inbound mail also, but it refuses to accept mail for
user@xxxxxxxxxxxx  .
remember, mydomain.com is our pubblic domain name.

Have you checked your SMTP attributes to see what they look like
compared
to the old machine.  Do you have the WRKDIRE setup. Can you ping your
gateway SMTP with any problems.

seems as on v5r4 one could simply add reference to mydomain.com into
SYSTEMI host table and "override"  the domain portion of smtp alias
table.
any ideas on how to "convince" the v7r1 to accept incoming smtp with
recipient domain portion  mydomain.com?

any help would be appreciated
thanks
