On another forum I read about adding environment variable QIBM_CCSID with the value I need - someone thought that shouldn't work, but it does. It tells QShell what to use when creating files - I'm pretty sure that will be useful around here.

Then sed did the trick - got some help from Mark Waterbury - the thing I'm doing is toggling true and false in the middle of a file-

QSH CMD('sed ''s/false/true/'' original.txt > output.txt')

Very cool - and this group comes to my rescue once again!
