Loyd,
The settings are on the Ethernet Line Description. Use WRKLIND
then option 5 against the line to see both the configured and currently
negotiated settings. Note that changes to these settings require the
line be varied off so that work typically must be done at the console.
If your network gear is Cisco and it's 100Mb capable only then you
want to hard code both the speed and duplex settings and MATCH them to
the switch gear and after bringing them back on verify in the switch
(show int fan/n etc) and on IBM i with option 5 that they agree. If you
have GbE gear then *AUTO is recommended. Your 5701 card is in fact GbE
capable. In both cases the CMNRCYLMT parameter should be set to (1 0)
to enable continuous retries on the Ethernet line.
One simple test I use is to do DSPPFM on a very large file and
simply hold the page down key for 30 seconds. Watch the screen and
pretend that you are Commander Data and can read it all. It should
proceed smoothly for the entire time with no stops or pauses. If there
are several second pauses in there then you almost certainly have a
mismatch between the switch and IBM i. This will slow down many things,
your printers included.

Our network team replaced all our core routers and switches this past
weekend. Since then, our iSeries appears to be slower when talking on the
network. This is most apparent when printing, where spooled files stay in
PND and WTR status for longer than normal, compared to last week.
I think we need to change the negotiation settings in the router and the
iSeries for them to match. All the router ports are set to auto negotiate
but I recall the iSeries settings are manual. I do not remember where to
see or set the negotiation settings. Also, is a 5701 NIC gigabit capable?
Thanks,
