Ok, thanks. I've severely simplified what this application is doing to
focus on the SQL question. SNDMSG isn't what it's doing under the
condition.

Thanks for your thoughts.

I understand what you are asking for. While IBM supplies a SELECT MYNBR
FROM final table ( INSERT INTO QTEMP/DELETEME (MYNBR) VALUES(:x + :z))

you want to be able to do this on an update as well like SELECT MYNBR FROM
final table ( update qtemp/deleteme set mynbr=mynbr+1 where mykey=:hMykey)

You can submit a requirement and wait for IBM to determine if that is in the
specs and then decide what to return if more than one row is updated, or if
no row is updated.
Or you can try to figure out what you want to do with this number. If all
you are doing is returning a SNDMSG saying "Dude, you're usage count is up
to the point where you should do a cycle count" then there's no reason you
couldn't do that with a trigger.

I'm just trying to see if there is a way to get the value just updated by
an
SQL statement, without having to reretrieve the record. I mean, I could
just resort to native data retrieval but was trying to stay with SQL.

Why would the update program need to perform the logic? Why couldn't the
trigger program? Seriously. What happens if you adopt a batch program,
web
interface, C/S interface, etc; do you still want the logic in each of
these
programs?

But if just HAS to be the update program you could study throwing and
catching exceptions.
