Why the 'q'? No idea. Just the way the sa set it up. He is rarely
on site now. People get new jobs as the current system is being
replaced.

iSeries NetServer properties (ancient v5r4)

Server name: QS1015362A
Allow iSeries NetServer access using the system name: no
Domain name: STFRAN

There was some issue, some time back, involving qs1015362 and
qs1015362a. Never heard from sa. He claims WE ostracise HIM.

Why the 'q'?  Back in the day if your system started with a number you had
to prefix it with a Q.  But your system starts with an S.  So, why the Q?

Try again
Start, Programs, IBM i Access for Windows, System i Navigator.  Once in
there expand your system.  Expand Network.  Expand Servers, (not TCP/IP
Configuration!!!), Select TCP/IP.  Right click on i5OS NetServer.  Select
Properties.

nslookup qs1015362a or nslookup qs1015362 (a mess, yada,yada, yada).

Can't find server name for address 10.50.1.253
Can't find server name for address 10.50.1.254
    non-existent domain

I called the network person on this.  Just got voice mail

ping qs1015362
This works.  Not in hosts table on my pc.  Maybe it is cached?

DSPNETA
   Current system name:  S1015362
       Pending    (nothing listed)

   Local network id: APPN
   Network server domain: S1015362

I can't find what you reference for iNav on the last.

Hopefully you have that set up on a Domain Name Server (aka DNS).  To
test
that get to a command line on the PC and try
nslookup qs1015362a
When I look up one of my lpars I am getting
C:\Users\ROB>nslookup gdihq
Server:  gdsdns.dekko-1
Address:  10.10.4.250

Name:    gdihq.dekko-1
Address:  10.17.6.33

This tells me the name/address of one of our dns' is gdsdns and it's at
10.10.4.250.  nslookup is browsing that dns to see that gdihq points to
10.17.6.33

A few possible errors come to mind.
- nslookup doesn't find any dns servers.  Contract with a consultant to
set up a couple.  Good to have fail over.
- same.  You have a dns server but your pc isn't set up to use them.
 Have
consultant fix your PC.  Might be some Windows domain work.
- nslookup finds a dns but that name is not registered at that dns.  Fix
that by registering it or ensuring that really is the name you should
know
it as.
If nslookup doesn't work but ping qs1015362a does then you have a host
table entry.  Stop doing that and use a DNS.

Now go to your i and type in DSPNETA.
What do you have for:
Current system name  . . . . . . . . . . . . . . :   GDISYS
 Pending system name  . . . . . . . . . . . . . :
Local network ID . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . :   GDI1
Network server domain  . . . . . . . . . . . . . :   GDISYS

What do you have in iNav for Network, Servers, TCP/IP, right click i5/OS
Netserver and select Properties - what's in server name?  Does all this
stuff match qs1015362a?

I have four mapped drives to our i.

From my pc at a command line, net use shows one as unavailable.

The three that work are set up as \\172.16.20.10\<directory name>

The one that does not work is set up as \\qs1015362a\<directory>

What brought this to a head, so to speak, was a call from my
supervisor.  We are in the middle of a mess with a consultant.  They
want everything, and they want it now.  For their part, they drag
their feet on meeting their obligation to us.  They were supposed to
have a server set yp inside our network for files to be dropped onto
using FTP.  Still not there.  My supervisor has been copying files
using a mapped drive to another of their servers.  This morning, his
connections to the i (running v5r4, way behind on cume).

I looked at my connections and they were down, but all came back
except the one.  I started iNav, and was just looking around when my
supervisor called that his connections were back.

Where do I look for where qs1015362a is defined?  Looks like whatever
process uses that name is not working.
