We've not had a need for modems for some time now. We told all customers
and vendors we were abandoning computer generated fax. If they wanted
that they could get it printed, emailed, EDI, ... but not fax. An
alternative for modems is a fax service or appliance like we use for
faxing from/to Lotus Domino. We switched to that when IBM dropped Lotus
Domino Fax for i. i was actually the last platform that had any native
IBM supplied solution for Domino faxing. It's now all third party,
regardless of platform.
We have fiber and SCSI tape drives. We are replacing all SCSI tape
drives. We will be switching a LOT of LTO3 tapes to LTO5 and the person
selling us LTO5 tapes is give us $5 a tape for the old tapes.
