Or mirror to a 3rd party cloud service or even a remote SAN you own but has to go over public "wire" to get there and has the possibility of being rerouted

Yeah, kind of what I am wondering also. Maybe it's useful for those people who use SAN and they don't trust the staff running the SAN?
