Well, I've managed to find all the pieces of this puzzle, and put them together:

First, do a RTVCURDIR.

Then, for each possible location of an acceptable JVM (ordered from most desirable to least desirable), attempt to CD to that directory, monitoring for CPFA0A9, going to the next one on the list in case of failure.

This leaves us with the first matching JVM as our current directory.

Then RTVCURDIR again (into a different variable), and use that variable to set a job-scoped JAVA_HOME environment variable. (It appears that when you pass a variable containing a RTVCURDIR result to ADDENVVAR, it goes in without trailing blanks, even though I've seen trailing blanks in environment variables. Nice.)

Then CD back to the original saved current directory, and do whatever needs to be done with the JAVA_HOME set to a specific JVM.
