If you already know Python or would like to learn a powerful,
easy-to-use, modern dynamic programming language that works extremely
well with physical and logical files ("native" QSYS) as well as IFS
stream files, then another option is to use iSeries Python and xlwt.
I cannot stress enough how much less there is to set up if you go this
route than there is with POI-based solutions, not that there is
anything wrong with those. Also, apart from working with Excel,
iSeries Python is just ludicrously easy to use.
Even if you don't want to learn Python, you can use my utility that
copies physical files to Excel binary format, similar to CPYTOIMPF
except you get native Excel at the end, with some additional amenities
over most similarly easy-to-use solutions:
