Your last sentence helps me. About the keepalives. I've been telling
coworkers to make double darn sure that they are using a shared session
that is also running on the hmc. Then if the screen doesn't seem to be
updating on a long process (like a save) they can kill and restart the
shared session on the remote it should update. The problem is if they
didn't start the session on the hmc first they just killed their backup.
Much like the time I was in Dallas and you helped me figure that out after
the third time trying to load lic on a new lpar remotely (and I would kill
the session to go to a COMMON session). Calling our BOFH and having her
start the shared session on the hmc directly was a lifesaver. We now have
a KVM on one of our hmc's (the one in a different city from where I work).
