The other question I might ask or have for the last 10 years or so
does it make sense to even produce the report on the AS/400.

Is the report something that people want on demand? Unless I am
writing just some quick and dirty I don't use RPG to write a report.
Instead I either just use RPG to create my work file and then QMQRY to
create the report or better yet is to use Reporting Services in SQL
Server or Crystal Reports. I then write a stored procedure in RPG on
the AS/400 and call it from the report writer and the user can invoke
the report.

Basically, I question the sense of writing reports on the AS/400. User
want to slice and dice, output in Excel, etc.

May I ask if it *has* to be SQL, and if so, why?

Judging by some of the other answers, and the responses to those
answers, it seems to me as though using RPG would be just as easy to
code, or easier (you could even use level breaks and the RPG cycle!);
and probably execute faster to boot.
