Many years ago indeed. The limit for a PC command hasn't been
anything close to that low for a long time. According to

it used to be 128, with a command-line switch that could extend it
somewhat (which may be what you're thinking of, even though it has no
effect on STRPCCMD).

Any remotely current PC allows just under 2K characters, and the
latest ones allow just under 8K. The 123-character limit specifically
belongs to STRPCCMD. From the horse's mouth:
