Hello,

I just fixed two 3164's by hand. Things to check are indeed the fuse, and
all soldering joints.

The fuses were blown in both units, and one unit had a loose resistor, and
another one had a transistor which broke off. Those kinds of parts are
easy-to-find and cheap, and service can be carried out by yourself.

I live in Belgium, and now have three fixed Twinax terminals, I can miss
one 3486 and one 3164.

I live near Antwerp.

Twinax would only happen if i manage to find one cheap in Holland for
pickup, as shipping these things (as i recall they weigh as much as a
family car) would make it way too expensive.

My first few years of working with an AS/400 did involve an old 3180
terminal, that was heavy enough to use as a boat anchor. But it
eventually shorted out (I tried putting in a new fuse; the fuse didn't
just blow, it exploded!), and since then, I've only been using a 3477, a
3487, a 3489, and a Yestation. The 3477 and 3487 are no bulkier than a
CRT monitor and a buckling-spring keyboard, and the 3489 (which is just
a 3488 with some kind of graphics capability that's only used with some
sort of fax server application) and the Yestation don't have their own
monitors, so they're even lighter. (Word to the wise: use a CRT with
them: if there's an LCD that works well with them, I have yet to see it!)
