Firefox didn't give me any obvious sign of a problem with
ftp://user@xxxxxxxxxxx:password@xxxxxxxxxxxxx other than prompting me for credentials again; it's probably a better test if the credentials are correct.
Also, you should be able to URLEncode the credentials. Firefox suggested I was sending user%40address%2Ecom as the username.
