The inside/outside auditors at my former employer required us to restore a
random data library from a tape of their choosing at least once a year. A
couple of times we put the restored lib at the top of the library list (on a
development machine) and had to do random inquiries to compare against the
production data.

How do you "verify a backup?"

Insure the tape is readable?
DSPTAP?
DSPTAP to *OUTFILE and verify everything on the system is on the tape?

Jeff,

I'm surprised at you! I would have thought that you would have tested
your backup.

A few years ago I had an auditor who, in an attempt to find something
negative to put in the audit letter, asked me if I had tested my backup.
Sure, I replied. Okay, well, do your verify every night's backup?
BRMS, which I didn't use, might have something to satisfy an auditor;
I didn't so I had to write my own. Made him happy.

Subject: BRMS *SAVSYS - Media share

All,

I stumbled across this on page 127 of "Backup, Recovery, and Media
Services for i"

"A backup control group with the *SAVSYS special value must specify
*NO in the Shared media field of the media class."

The media class I use is ULTRIUM2, which has Shared media *YES. Is
this telling me the backups I have been doing for 7+ years with BRMS
are not usable to recover the system?

The tape drives are 3581-028 used in library mode.

Thanks.
