Hmm. Actually, "Select rrn(x), x.* from filea x" would be it.

Except that "rrn()" doesn't appear to be universal across all database systems.

I think maybe Michael's suggestion of
If you're using a cursor, you can use UPDATE WHERE CURRENT OF...

appears to be what's needed. Now, I just need to learn how to use an SQL cursor . . . .
