I have An arduino attached to my iSeries control panel. As I'm a hobbyist and I'm mostly on the road, I just IPL it when required and power it down when ready. I made a simple sketch which could also read out the display and press the buttons to change settings and such.

Vriendelijke groet,
Sincerely,
Yvan Janssens

Yep! An Arduino with a tiny magnetic plunger would do this quite
easily. The entire thing would be smaller than a pack of cigarettes
plus a brick power supply. You could stick it to the front of the
machine with Velcro and could add a display to it so you could set the
schedule easily right from the box itself.

That said, I like the ASMI access more better. :-)

In the days of the System 38, there was a timer with a "plunger finger"

It was a third-party device meant for European customers, where the cost
of power was 3 or 4 times the cost of the U.S.
So shutting down the System /38 overnight made sense.
Customers loved it since it had the box up and running by the time
people arrived in the morning.

I would venture a guess that Dr. Franken could engineer a little
robotic arm that would reach out on command and press the power button.
