FMTDTA works fine.  I've used it for more than 30 years.  I don't
recommend it in 2013 though.  It relies on knowing what positions in the
file to sort, not column names.

Here's an example of a tagalong sort:

HFILE     20A         X
O C       1NEC2
FNC  18  31
FNC  33  38
FDC   1 427

In my opinion, you'd be better served to create the work file as a keyed
file and then you can easily read it in keyed order.
