#5 is incorrect. Here is the data from IBM's own financial reports:

http://www.ibm.com/investor/1q12/press.phtml
Q1 2012 Software: 5.6 billion total software sales, $590 million from OS sales (AIX, Power Linux, IBM I all combined).

http://www.ibm.com/investor/2q12/press.phtml
Q2 2012 Software: 6.2 billion total software sales, $628 million from OS sales

http://www.ibm.com/investor/3q12/press.phtml
Q3 2012 Software: 5.8 billion total software sales, $597 million from OS sales

http://www.ibm.com/investor/4q12/press.phtml
Q4 2012 Software: 7.9 billion total software sales, $709 million from OS sales

IBM's operating system sales for 2012 only totaled 9.89% of their entire software sales for all of 2012. Now take into account that the 9.89% is over all OS's (AIX, Power Linux, IBM i). How much of the 9.89% pie the IBM i gets is anyones guess, IBM doesn't disclose those numbers unfortunately.

There are a lot of ERP and database vendor choices on Linux.

Sorry, I call FUD on this one.

Several things are wrong:
1) AIX is not free. Oracle for AIX and DB2 for AIX are much LESS Free!
2) Linux is not Free on POWER. There are a couple free ones that might run but supported Linux on POWER costs real money.
3) Even then POWER Linux doesn't alway support all the apps etc that run on X86 Linux.
4) Free Software is worth what you pay for it. While there are many MANY pieces of utility software that have value it's a rare company that runs it's entire ERP/DRP/??? on totally free software. Even if they find a free package they will almost certainly have some support agreement in place that cost them money.
5) IBM i is the #1 source of software revenue for Power Systems.

Watson is a very VERY different applications from anything we might run.
Watson chews up CPU by the bucketloads and runs almost completely in memory. IBM i is not the architecture for such things, it's built for business (I've read that somewhere... :-) )

Now I don't disagree that having IBM i Access available when Windows 8 debuted would have been great but I also know of exactly zero people so far that actually like Windows 8 and the same number using it for business.

It's most likely a funding problem to keep the updates rolling out. IBM i market penetration keeps going down from everything I've seen.

The Power hardware is pretty slick, but I think people who don't have lots of legacy application baggage are more apt to use a version of Linux / Unix on the power platform rather than iSeries for a whole host of reasons such as:

1. Much broader vendor / third party product support 2. Larger user
base on Linux/Unix than IBM I, and therefore easier to find skilled
workers 3. The OS is free (depending on your Unix variant) 4. Boat
loads of open source / free software

IBM themselves chose Linux over IBM i when building Watson presumably
because of the more advanced software available on Linux for which
Watson is based (Apache Hadoop and UIMA)

Thank you. It's the Golden Rule thing: Do unto others as you'd have them do unto you. When IBM launches rNext I'm sure they'd like all the players to have participated in the beta program and be ready on GA date. W8 had an extensive beta program. IBM should have been on that like stink.

I've submitted DCR's clamoring for support for W8 for IBM i Access for
Windows. This crap of waiting until the OS is so obsolete it's been
replaced has to stop.

If it's Windows RT, then "no" as it's not x86/x64-based.

If it's Windows 8, then "yes" since it's Windows 8. Tablet is just
the formfactor. You linked to a Surface Pro, which runs real Windows
8. Once IBM supports Access on Wn8 it will work.
