We tried but it wasn't available/usable. Guess I had the "el-cheapo" disk
cage....

From an IBM RedBook re: "Builder Updates"

DASD Concurrent Maintenance Cage
The #7133 is a DASD six disk cage for the Model 270. The #7133 enables disk
unit concurrent maintenance and replaces
the standard base non-concurrent maintenance DASD six disk cage.

On the 270's, I know it was model/feature dependent. I had a 270-2248

Concurrent maintenance on disk units has been available since before the
"black boxes" that were introduced in 1995.

If I remember correctly, it came about with V2R3 of OS/400.
Unfortunately, it took almost 10 years before most CEs were willing to
actually do concurrent maintenance on disk units.
