Ok, I found his other article about sequence objects.
He felt there were a couple of good reasons to use a sequence versus an
identity column.
One was for a composite key. For example todays date and a sequence.
Another was was to get the value for your next order number for your order
header and use that same value for the order number in your order detail
file. That may have been valid when he wrote the article, however I think
using a choice of the "select from insert" example I displayed earlier, or
the Identity_val_local function. Which, if you read the infocenter (7.1)
for identity_val_local it voices a preference for "select from insert".
