Okay, I think I've got it now. The SMTP server can be configured to "forward" all non-local mail to an external SMTP server. That makes both of us right. SNDDST can't do "relay"; it only connects to the IBM i SMTP server. But the IBM i SMTP server can "forward" all mail to an external server such as Exchange.

Contrast that with a Java mail API, or the sendMail() API in Net.Data, which can "relay" to an external mail server and bypass the IBM i SMTP server altogether. They don't even require the IBM i SMTP server to be running.
