I am thinking maybe never. Comes from experience with System V Unix
as well as DOS. On those systems, the directory was allocated a fixed
size. As entries were added, the directory would fill. Eventually,
the allocated size would be full, so additional space was allocated.
When files were deleted, the allocated dr4ectory space was not
released. When this happened to the root directory, there was no
recourse. When this happened to a subdirectory, the contents could be
moved to a different subdirectory and then the now empty subdirectory
could be deleted and recreated.

So, maybe this would work: copy relevant entries from the directory
to a newly created directory. Delete the original directory and
recreate. Then move everything back. At the user profile level,
create a new profile. Change ownership of objects to the new profile.
Delete and recreate the original profile and chgown objects back. to
original owner.

Unless, of course, the system manages to do this internally. I am
only guessing about the internals here.

I bought an ASUS netbook in 2007. It came with 8G of SSD. Started
acting goofy. Reason was that while I was deleting things, or thought
I was, the system had other plans. Files were renamed with a .wch~.
So, they no longer were visible. Found a script that actually got
rid of the things. Made a huge difference.

Maybe the i is in a similarmode of never forgetting.

No, this isn't spam. :)

Seriously, my user profile has grown to the point where it is affecting
our system saves. I looked and my *USRPRF object is nearly a gigabyte
in size. I tracked it down to it more than likely being caused by the
fact that I've created literally millions of IFS files. (Don't ask why;
I'm trying not to cast aspersions.) It's not important anyway since I'm
trying to get rid of the files. I'm ZIPping the files together and
deleting them, but I don't see any effect yet on my user profile.

When do you think my user profile will slim down? Later today? After an
IPL? Never?

Enquiring minds want to know!
