Folks, this is one darn good reason to keep your system current on PTF's,
TRs (if on 7.1), sub releases (like 545 and 611 - prior to TR's on 7.1),
groups, etc.

Because any recent SAVSYS tape could then be used to initialize the new
system with the worst case being applying any new ptf's. Now, you could
use distribution media (like a new respin ;-) ) to initialize the new
system. IBM says this:
"If you use the distribution media to restore the Licensed Internal Code,
you will lose some of your system information, such as the program
temporary fixes you have applied."
The question is: Does "such as" list ALL the loss? Because reapplying
PTF's isn't that big of a deal. Especially when compared to disk
initialization.

There's nothing stopping you from doing the LIC install and disk
initialization during the week from media. other than a need to get any
recent PTF's. You could still restore the OS and "user information" from
the save of the old machine. What, if anything, do you lose by restoring
LIC from distribution media?
Ok, lic PTF's are a given.
What about system name and all? Isn't that restored with the OS and not
the LIC?
What about any additional SST user profiles and stuff? Is that restored
with LIC or OS or user information?

If you do it this way, using LIC from distribution media (or even a
special PTF'd up Pete DVD) you should probably reinstall PTF's. Hey, a
LIC ptf may have a coreq of a SS1 ptf that you don't have. However, if
you are using a SAVSYS tape you just created (and you're already current
on PTFs) you wouldn't need to reinstall PTFs.
