There is a better way - the HACL - Host Access Class Library - this is what is used when recording a macro as VBA.

It is interesting - one of our folks here is just now asking me about this stuff. There appears to be a valid requirement.

HACL is much higher level - I took a quick look at EHLLAPI and ran away fast!

Nice thought. But highly unlikely. The APIs are too low-level and not intuitive. A tool vendor might attempt it. Most VBA programmers wouldn't have a clue of what they were dealing with. They would be inclined to bypass the 5250 application altogether, and write their own user interface.

Which raises the question, if the 5250 user interface is inadequate, to the point that it drives users to come up with something better, then why not provide say a browser user interface that looks and behaves like Excel (actually better). That's what we did for school teachers.
