I'm too chicken to run without hardware maintenance also. And I've still
got shrapnel from breaking plastic in the bottom of my tape library. I
too have had IBM replace back planes, etc. I've had problems where I just
knew it would take a PTF but they insisted on replacing hardware.
On the other hand, I really don't think that hardware maintenance covers
fire and flood, which were a couple of concerns mentioned by the good Dr.
I question whether slinging conveyor belts are also covered.
IBM does have an attitude of gratitude when it comes to long term
maintenance customers. You can't push the issue but a SNDSRVRQS *TEST can
often be enough to have a CE come onsite to tweak some little thing. Helps
to offer soda, bring back lunch, etc. Little stuff that goes a long way.
