Well, I toss in "not necessarily". I am thinking over Joe Pluta's recent
thread about too many stream file objects owned by one user profile and
one alternative was to have them stored in a database as BLOB type objects
(or some such thing) versus each being a separate object.
Processing row transactions are done via different auditing journals, etc.

We have pretty beefy connections between our machines. We have a fiber
sonnett ring from our complex to a local hospital and the internet we're
tapped into backed up by wireless direct line of site towers.
