Not all storage on the end of a fibre is created equal.

All SAN attached storage boxes have device drivers unique to the
operating system they will talk to. IBM i has them too, but we
just don't call them device drivers. In order for i to talk to
the storage box, it has to report in as a known device. This is
what happened when we announced NPIV support (followed by direct
& native) earlier this year. The device drivers to recognize a
disk type 2145 were backed in to LIC. The support for direct &
native attach came 3 months later due to the testing schedule.
