Chuck,
1) What profile do you use / recommend?
2) Why are there 2 replace releases, what are the differences?
QIBMRPLRLS IBM replace current release
QINSNEWSYS Install new AS/400

I'm not quite clear on the profiles. They have 3. If you display them,
minor differences on the one screen.
Installation Profile : QIBMRPLRLS
Enable automatic
configuration . . : *SAME
Device configuration
naming . . . . . . : *SAME
Default special
environment . . . : *SAME
Installation Profile : QINSNEWSYS
Enable automatic
configuration . . : Y
Device configuration
naming . . . . . . : *NORMAL
Default special
environment . . . : *NONE
The "Install New System" profile establishes a non-S/36EE [native] configuration, whereas the "Install Replace Release" leaves unchanged, whatever was previously established on the system; i.e. the prior configuration, with regard to the system values QAUTCFG, QDEVNAMING, and QSPCENV, remain the _same_ as they were. If that RplRls installation profile is used for a new installation, then those system values will be set to the defaults [the "shipped value"], which happen to match what are shown in the above NewSys installation profile.
