Hi Sarah,

One of your previous comments about the web system that you are
retrofitting to be 5250 was along the lines of that its response time
could not compete with the rest of the system that was 5250. I really
think that what you are doing is very much a retrograde step. What
should be being done, and it was mentioned previously by one of the
other responders, is investigating why the web response time for your
application on your local LAN is so different to the 5250 emulation
response time. The reason for this could range from work management
issues on the IBM I, to bandwidth issues on the LAN, to the power of the
PCs involved. However it can never be the same as the 5250 response time
as 5250 communications is relatively more efficient.

At least I would hope that your existing web application is architected
along MVC lines so that it is relatively easy to replace (or add to) the
V(iew) portion of it with a "thin" 5250 front end. Usually people are
confronted with going the opposite way - a 5250 monolithic application
that needs to have a web front end added.

Subject: RE: Common Display File (Header + File-level Keywords)

Thank you all for your suggestions and help. I did not realize UIM was
an alternative to DDS, or really what it was for until it was mentioned
here. I have been reading up on it and testing it out a little today and
I think it is definitely worth learning more about - I even found the
half a paragraph in that document about imbeds (includes) after you
indicated this was a possibility Mark; I really appreciate you pointing
out this aspect!

I also appreciate the recommendations for making DDS work better for me.
I was thinking of activating all of the function keys to avoid keyboard
locking, so it may be reasonable to use the old copy-and-paste with some
customizable header fields to create some standards. I would like to
avoid the added complication of a precompiler if I can...

Thank you for helping me understand the options, Sarah
