I do this:

ldapsearch -h ldap.mysystem.com -D "cn=ldap query,OU=UserAccounts,DC=mycorp
,DC=myloc,DC=com" -w ldap -b "OU=UserAccounts,DC=mycorp,DC=myloc,DC=com"
"(sn=Ryan)" cn sn telephoneNumber employeeID

Parens around the search term?
