There is a well defined process documented in the cover letter for the 
HMC upgrades to do this.  Essentially you download a separate set of 
about 5 files and place them on an FTP site reachable by the HMC. Then 
in the command line you pull those images over to the HMC with 
GETUPGFILES (sp?).  Once there you do the save upgrade data (VERY 
IMPORTANT) and then a special IPL from the command line to do the 
upgrade. I have done MANY HMCs this way including at least a dozen HMCs 
that I have never physically seen.  Only failure I've had so far was on 
my own HMC going to V7R7.8.0 which is a known issue.

DO Be prepared to not be able to reach the HMC for 'some minutes' as 
that single hard drive in there means it will take a minimum of 15 
minutes and more like 1/2 hour before it starts communicating again. IF 
you can get to a display on the device you'll see things happening but 
when you're strictly remote it takes some patience to trust it's 
actually going to come back.
