Agreed that this will indeed write a pattern of something, and I think with an IBM i storage space (*OPEN) that it would probably fill the thing with binary zeros. Thing is for a proper erase you need to be able to write a pattern and then a different pattern and then yet a different pattern etc. So with the NWSSTG you get no choice and thus only can write once.
