This is why you ALWAYS do Save Upgrade Data to external media. When I say always, I mean absolutely every time. If you had done this, after the upgrade you could have mounted the media, and restored the HMC Upgrade data from the external media. This has saved me a few times when an upgrade has gone askew.

Subject: Re: HMC Upgrade and the Magic Key

That sounds exactly my experience a few weeks ago. I was doing an upgrade with media I burned myself (V7.7.80).

Working with IBM confirmed that I should have received an "insert next disk" prompt. Instead it dropped me out to a shell. There was nothing to do.

IBM concluded it was the media. I wasn't so sure.

I ended up doing an "install" with the same media. It did ask me for the second DVD and completed normally. Since this was an install and not an upgrade I had to rediscover my servers and redo my HMC profiles.

OK I knew this answer once but it has been a while. During an HMC
Upgrade using Recovery Media, at the the end of the first DVD, the HMC
posts a question about wanting to install additional software ( I
think that is correct ).there are 2 options It appears that I should
press a '1' to continue and what I expect to see is it eventually tell
me to put the
next/#2 DVD in the machine and probably press enter or some such thing.

What I get is nothing on the screen and if I press enter it just
repeats itself. I have tried recently to use the both the 10key #1 and
QWERTY #1 with the same results.

What am I supposed to press? this as happended to me at multiple
levels of HMCs and with a mix of keyboards
