Or more specifically, directly from the InfoCenter, the "VM/MVS
bridge profile". That user profile serves in part, for the
implementation of /bridging/ queued SNA traffic between the OS/400 [IBM
i OS] and the mainframe; a /gateway/ for distributions betwixt. At
least one job IIRC was run under the user profile QGATE in the QSNADS
subsystem [for SNA/DS work].
Apparently the *USRPRF QGATE also serves some purpose for the SMTP;
whereby the SMTP relies on some of the underlying support that was
already being provided by the SNA Distribution Services.
