I was the same way. News400 and Midrange Computing were like Coke and
Pepsi for me and I couldn't wait for them to show up and I couldn't decide
which one I would choose if I could only get one.

Luckily at that time my employer got them both. Then I started writing for
them and got free issues. I still have a large stack of them. :) Maybe
my daughter who's learning to read will get a kick out of reading my old
articles (I probably would too! haha)

I hear ya. Just a shame. I got such a quick little thrill when the new
issue showed up in my mail. Particularly tickled if security or advanced
administrative stuff was there! Not only did I subscribe, but I paid for
the VIP version, which had even more technical good stuff! I also look
forward to any print books on our subject matter, such as a new book from
Carol Woodbury every few years with a new security bible!

Showing my age I guess in digging printed methodology so much.

I have a Kindle Fire, but I still find myself picking up books also!

There weren't enough people that read or paid for the magazine to make it.
It's not the information necessarily; it's that people don't use that
technique. As has been said, if advertisers don't buy ads, and if people
don't pay for subscription, it's tough to make it go.

Must be something wrong with me. I miss the print magazines such as
System iNews and still have a few issues with relevant articles that I
refer to from time to time. To me, more information is better, and
especially with the 'I'. Oh well, I am obviously very much in the
minority. I don't claim to read every word on the websites or
magazines, but if one calls to me, I find the time.

Me too, however, if you started to publish as you suggest which
vendors are going to buy advertising from you just so you turn around
and publish a less than perfect article about them? Remember this is
not about publishing a nice newsletter or magazine that gives you
information; it's about making money on the advertising. The ads they
were running were not effective in getting you to buy, so vendors
stopped advertising. No advertising, no magazine.

On the other hand, if you think there is a market for this type of
product, the cost of entry is now very low. Get yourself a cloud
based web site, start lining up authors and vendors willing to pay for
advertising and you're in business.

all of the industry pubs, with the exception of Timothy Pricket Morgan
at IT Jungle, are not very interesting these days. I would like to
read about which vendors are ripping off their customers and which do
not. Who provides great tech support. Interview retired IBMers for
their perspective on what is going on now and recount projects they
worked on. Ask people about user group sessions they have liked.
Research shops to find out what they are spending their money on. What
it actually cost to upgrade to a 720. New techniques that programmers
are using that simplify their apps or save time.
Review the ebay market from time to time and interview the established
sellers. Report salary and contractor rates people are getting around
the country and international. Report to the reader the company names
and locations where ibm i is being used. News like that would interest
me.
