Our Canon people told us we'd need 3rd party, I-O Corp, hardware (almost $2K) to sit in between the server and the printer. Needless to say, that go vetoed fast.

Your ImageRunner model does support PJL and PCL along with postscript.
Whether or not the license was sold to with the printer is the question.
If you are printing PCL, now it should work.
To get the PDL(Page Description Language) manual for any Canon Office printers or MFD's, you must sign up as a developer, but it is free.

Sign up for the 'free' essential membership then search for PDL which will give you a list of all the manuals. Ideally make sure you know your specific model and firmware level, because there are 6 pages of PDL manuals listed.
