Since the only part of the virtualization scenario that Larry suggests is
that IBM i cannot do NPIV, would it not make sense to put in a requirement
that IBM i do NPIV ( or at least virtualize the adapter as opposed to just
the device ) as far as Tape goes? It already does disk and Ethernet very
well.

What you're describing now is exactly what we are doing on our latest setup.
VIOS virturalizes the ethernet and tape to each lpar.
An IBM i host virtualizes all the disk.
