And does TESTN really work against a packed decimal field that someone may
have overlaid with a character data structure? No it doesn't. DDS
defined data is amazingly simple to corrupt.

One example is simply doing something like this:
Let's say your file has a field called FileNbr. And it is packed 9,0.
These operations are legit:
BsDs DS 4A
wFileNbr like(FileNbr)

Read DDSile;
wFileNbr=FileNbr;
BsDs='AAAA'; // wFileNbr is now set to 'AAAA'
FileNbr=wFileNbr; // FileNbr is now set to 'AAAA'
Update DDSRec; // no decimal data error will be generated on this DDS
file.
// But if I had tried
Write DDLRec; // decimal data error
