replacing OPNQRYF and RLA by SQL, it might become faster, but you would pay with more ressources, (faster CPU and more memory). Modern code might need less maintenance, but you would pay with effort to rewrite functionality, you have already. The main effect of modern, well modularized code would be better programmer performance, but you would have to pay with education effort first. If you want to minimze hardware, best would be to go back to batch oriented RPG2 with sort cycle and MR logic. If your goal is maximal speed, you would need as much hardware as your applications could use and modern ILE would outperform RPG2 and java would outperform ILE RPG, if you use it in the right way.
