Buck,

This tells me your V7R2 system default is Java 6, not 7

java *version tells me this:
java version "1.6.0"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build pap3260sr16fp1-20140706_01(SR16
FP1)) IBM J9 VM (build 2.4, JRE 1.6.0 IBM J9 2.4 OS/400 ppc-32
jvmap3260sr16fp1-20140706_01 (JIT enabled, AOT enabled) J9VM - 20140626_204542 JIT - r9_20130920_46510ifx7
GC - GA24_Java6_SR16_20140626_1848_B204542)
JCL - 20140704_01
Java program completed

Buck,

Is Java 6 still the default for V7R2?

It doesn't look like it on my system.

So if you want to start using Java 7, you must change the configs you mentioned below, and then some.

If I wanted to move the system to default to a different JRE, I'd WRKENVVAR *SYS and set JAVA_HOME there.

I know of some 3rd party products that hard the java version based on the i5/OS level.
This is one of those areas that if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
But, we all know we must eventually go to Java 7.

I'm looking at installing Java 7 as a requirement for a 3rd Party

Anyone have any issues after installing Java 7? This is an IBM i 7.1
partition.

I'm on IBM i 7.2. GO LICPGM tells me this:
5770JV1 *BASE IBM Developer Kit for Java
5770JV1 11 Java SE 6 32 bit
5770JV1 12 Java SE 6 64 bit
5770JV1 14 Java SE 7 32 bit

WRKENVVAR *JOB
JAVA_HOME '/QOpenSys/QIBM/ProdData/JavaVM/jdk60/32bit'

I set JAVA_HOME in my initial program because I have some older stuff I want to use with Java 6. I created another user that does not set JAVA_HOME, so here is the system default of JAVA *VERSION:

java version "1.7.0"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build
pap3270_27sr1fp1-20140708_01(SR1
FP1))
IBM J9 VM (build 2.7, JRE 1.7.0 OS/400 ppc-32

GC - R27_Java727_SR1_20140707_1408_B205525
J9CL - 20140707_205525)
JCL - 20140707_01 based on Oracle 7u65-b16 Java program completed

Java 6 and Java 7 can live side by side. You need to ask the 3rd party vendor the recommended method of setting the JAVA_HOME they need.
